Turn the phone sideways
Hold it in landscape with the screen facing you, like a steering wheel. Either direction works.
Portrait Orientation Lock must stay on.
Turn on Portrait Orientation Lock
The page flipped to landscape, which would fight the steering. Open Control Center, tap the orientation lock so it shows locked, then hold the phone sideways.
The game is paused until the layout is portrait again.
